This project was an entry to the Sustainable Lab Contest sponsored by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture in the United States. It consisted on the design of a sustainable marine lab and educational center in the Salt River Bay National Historical Park in St. Croix, U.S.V.I. Our project’s design responds to the idea of leaving untouched the most area of terrain as possible, while fulfilling the necessities of the biologists, academic staff, students and general public. Salt River Bay is completely surrounded by mangroves and coral reefs that give life to the vast sea life; the main focus was to protect the endangered fauna.
However, for it to be sustainable, the center should also aid the economic & social aspects of its surroundings, therefore it also works as an entertainment center in an island where more than 75% of the income comes from tourism.
